7 Ways to improve your child’s Soccer skills and love of the game

Posted by Dan Kitchen | 30th October 2018

Giving our children the best possible opportunity to do well in life is perhaps the most important role as a parent. Just like we help our children with their schoolwork it also essential that we guide their interest into other hobbies and physical activities.

As my passion is Soccer, I’m going to share with you 7 ways in which you can help improve your child’s Soccer skills and love of the game.

  1. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
This may sound simple but giving praise to your child no matter how big or small the achievement is a great way of ensuring your child is having a good experience. Try to make all the little success they make while playing count.

  2. Learn through PLAY
Try to stay away from setting up the usual drills with your son or daughter as they can quickly become boring. Try to instead think of games or challenges which incorporate the fundamental skills of soccer and make a game out of the learning process.

  3. HEALTHY EATING
Providing healthy and nutritious meals for your child will enable them to have sufficient energy to participate on the field. Studies show that eating and balanced diet help promote concentration and cognitive ability which are essential for budding soccer players.

  4. SHARING YOUR PASSION
For young players who are new to the concept of Soccer, sharing your passion for game can be a great way to get them hooked. Simple things like sitting down with your son/daughter and watching your favorite team play on the television can be great bonding.  Soaking up the atmosphere of a live match is also a great way to spark your child’s interest. Let them ask questions and see how the game is played by the professionals.

  5. NO RULES
It is no secret that many of the greatest Soccer players over the years learnt how to play the game on the streets with their friends. Some of my fondest memories from growing up are from the times I spent playing soccer with my friends in the School Holidays. We made up our own rules and games and our aim first and foremost was to have FUN.  Consider arranging play dates for you children at the park. Take a ball and let them PLAY without restrictions.

  6. BE YOUR CHILDS #1 FAN
Showing up for your child’s practices and games can be a great way of supporting their development.  It will help them with their confidence and couple this with the positive reinforcement we mentioned earlier and you will be putting your son/daughter in the best possible position to succeed.

  7. PROFESSIONAL COACHING: Giving your child access to quality professional coaching is a great way of ensuring they are learning the fundamental skills of the game. Professional Coaches will be able to individually challenge your son/daughter and identify areas they can improve upon.

Follow our 7-step guide and you be will ensuring that you are giving your child the best possible chance to love Soccer and develop the skills of the game.
