Are you looking for a team or trying to find the right team for your child next season? Finding the right fit can be difficult, but finding the right coach can be even harder.
You’re looking for them to tick as many boxes as possible, and we’ve all been there.
Do they have qualifications? Do they have experience? Do they play the style of football you like? Are they organised? Do they have the right intentions? Do they have a strong personality? Do they have a personality?!
In our experience though, here are a few top traits you need to look for:
- They are person centered.
By this we mean they have intentions to put the need of the people first. They strive to have the best possible outcome, recognising the human side of sport. As John Wooden, one of the all-time leading USA Collegiate Basketball coach, said in the quote above “a good coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life”. - They earn your respect. They don’t just demand or expect it.
Resect is a two way street, any coach who is not showing you any, doesn’t deserve yours. Simple. - They are approachable and communicate well.
For us, a coach, club or organisation that aren’t willing to be open to a conversation with you, isn’t something you will be wanting to partner with for a long period of time. Look for people who share similar personal values with you, and are willing to discuss what and how they approach the sport. - They have a personality!
Of course everyone has one… but the person you are choosing to lead you or your child needs to be someone you relate to and can get the best out of you. Are they confident but not arrogant. Do they smile? Do they not take themselves to seriously? Do they know when to draw a line? Are they someone you’d like to be around regularly? - Experience and Education
The two things that should be very visible and very easy to find out, or just public knowledge. Every good coach should be constantly seeking new education, the more you learn, the more understand how little you know! If they don’t have a basic level of education… are they enrolled to get on a course soon?
Experience can come with playing and being around the game, or just coaching experience. The more someone has, the better, without a doubt. But people have to start somewhere!
We hope that when making your football decision this season, you are fortunate enough to feel you can have a say in who is influencing yours or your child’s game. A good coach will make sure you cannot wait to play the game again next season, and above all that is what we really need.
