My guide to skills needed for each position in Football

Goalkeeper:

Agile: Able to run well, jump, dive and get up quickly

Handling: Able to catch and handle crosses. Able to dive and cover distance to save ball however possible.

Have a good understanding of angles and distances to protect the goal

Distribution: Be able to effectively distribute the ball using both feet and hands.

Leadership: Organize and direct fellow defenders within the team defensive structure

Communication: Can instruct the team to ensure correct balance is achieved whilst attacking as Goalkeeper can see all in front of them

Bravery: To demonstrate bravery in all actions and decisions

My Favourite Goalkeeper: Pater Schmeichel.

FullBacks:

First Touch. Vitally important as often first receiver when playing out from the back.

Passing Range: Accurate for both short and long range.

Fit: Needs to get up and down the field, with overlapping runs.

Good Crosser: Needs to be able to consistently deliver quality balls into the danger area.

Speed: Needs to be able to cover in defence. Able to run with the ball quickly.

Defence: Intercepting, marking, heading and tackling skills

Brave: Needs to be brave in a tackle and with heading and be prepared to put body on the line in defence.

My Favourite Fullback: Paulo Maldini

 

Centre Backs:

Organisation: Combine with fellow central defenders in marking and passing on attacking players, and keeping with defensive structure.

Passing/Possession: Have effective passing range and ability to retain possession so not to lose ball in own half.

Speed: Quick, especially over first few yards, as come across quick strikers.

Defence: Intercepting, marking, tracking and tackling skills

Heading: Needs to be strong in the air as defends against crosses corners and long balls.

Brave: Be brave in every aspect of the game.

Favourite Centre Half: Franco Baresi

 

Centre Midfield:

All-round Football skills:  Good support angles, awareness of situations around you, receiving skills, good touch (on all surfaces)

Turning with the ball, ball protection on receiving, quality range of passing, long range shooting, one touch finishing, marking, pressing, intercepting, tracking and challenging.

Fit: Covers most yards in defence and in attack.

Brave. Be courageous in every aspect of the game.

Favourite Centre Mid: Bryan Robson

 

Regista: Deep lying Midfielder:

All-round Football skills:  Good support angles, awareness of situations around you, receiving skills, good touch (on all surfaces)

Turning with the ball, ball protection on receiving, quality range of passing, long range shooting, one touch finishing, marking, pressing, intercepting, tracking and challenging.

Vision: referred tom as the play maker this player needs the vision to create chances through sheer brilliance of, weight/disguise of pass.

Possession: Able to maintain possession though quick 1 touch play and clever movement of finding space.

Finesse: Has that ability to score, deliver free kicks and score through pure magic/finesse.

No.10 Attacking Midfieder:

All-round Skills: 

Positioning and knowledge of how to find and make space, Awareness of situations around them. Can play on the half turn. Good receiving skills, turning and protecting/shielding skills. Great passing ability with the need for one touch play. Combination play. Can penetrate with quality forward passing, Intelligence/awareness of when to attack the penalty area. Score goals with both feet both inside and outside the box-one touch finishing.

Inspire: Can inspire team mates and lift a crowd through their ability and creativity.

Match winner: Can create that match winning moment out of nothing.

 


Favourite No 10: Maradona

Winger:

First Touch: Efficient and varied receiving skills (ground/aerial control)

Fit: Needs to get up and down the field helping in attack and defence.

Passing and Crossing: Effective passing skills including 1 touch, Crossing the ball with both feet using one touch when necessary (usually on the run)

Dribbling: Excellent dribbling and ball manipulation skills,

Speed: Needs to be quick and good at running with the ball at pace with deceptive body movements.

Scoring: Scoring skills with both head and feet.

Favourite Winger: Ronaldo

 

Striker:

Explosive speed/Movement: Quick in and around the box to lose markers exploit space and attack the ball first.

Strong: Efficient ball receiving and holding the ball up under pressure.

Fitness: Pressing, closing down skills. Runs for the ball, runs to create space.

Goal scoring: Inside/Outside the box, two feet and headed goals.

Mentally Strong: Does not let head drop after missed chances, has huge confidence and belief in themselves.

Favourite Striker: Thierry Henry.
