MUSICA COPA RETURNS FOR 2017

Posted by KIKOFF | 11th November 2017

Sydney’s music industry professionals usually get their ‘kicks’ from discovering new talent, releasing music, running festivals, promoting, publicising or going on tour. But for one priceless networking day of the year, a number of highly respected music companies will turn on their ‘out of office’ and head to Marrickville for a day of football and fundraising - MUSICA COPA!

Yep, the Australian music industry’s beloved charity 5-a-side football tournament is proudly back at it, celebrating their fifth anniversary, on Friday 1st December, at the pristine pitches of the KIKOFF Soccer Centre, Marrickville. On top of 21 legendary music crews (see below), an all-star line-up of artists will drop their mics to pull on the spikes and play football - celebrity players in previous years have included members of Flight Facilities, The Rubens, DMAs, Motez, Montaigne,What So Not, Nina Las Vegas and many more.

At this community event, spectators are welcome, and will have the opportunity to share a Heineken with their favourite musos (and music industry glitterati!) in thePlayer's Lounge, as well as carb-load with gourmet burger from the maestros at Mary's. A primo selection of DJs will be keeping vibes high through to day's end.

The stakes are high and each team will be playing to win money for their nominated charity. Since the event was established in 2013, Musica Copa has raised an incredible $40,000 for charity- with last year’s champions Lucky Ent raising $7000 for the Reach Foundation and runners upUniversal Music winning $3000 for Musicians Making A Difference. Head HERE to find out which amazing charities have been nominated this year. This year, Musica Copa hopes to raise even more money for charity thanks in part to generous contributions from our teams and partnersNike, Tito’s Vodka, Heineken, DJ Warehouse, Mary’s Burgers and Recovery Water.

Footy friends and business partners Paul Stix (UNDR Ctrl)andMartin Novosel (Boundary Sounds / Purple Sneakers) are the masterminds behind the passion project Musica Copa, and 2017 is already gearing up to be their most exciting tournament yet. Says Stix of the social enterprise…“for many people in the music industry (including myself), Musica Copa has become one of the favourite events on the annual calendar. It’s a nice milestone to get to 5 years, and Martin and I are really excited to welcome new teams Spotify, Nike All Stars, Of Leisure and Inertia Music to the tournament. We’re introducing 2 divisions for the first time this year and an improved open mixed team format to encourage even more female players this year. We’re humbled by the support Musica Copa receives from our industry friends, and we hope to raise as much money as we can for this year’s wonderful charities"

NEW STUFF FOR 2017:

LADIES RULE!

As we all strive for further gender equality across the music industry, Musica Copa will have an ‘open mixed’ team format (adopted by many Football NSW Futsal competitions), which requires 2 of the 4 outfield players on pitch at any time to be female - with each 8 player-squad having a mandatory minimum of 3 female players (with more encouraged of course!).

TWO DIVISIONS!

Over the years, it has emerged that there’s more actual real soccer skill and genuine competitiveness amongst our music industry players than we ever anticipated! So, introducing Division 1 for the elite teams who actually know a thing or two about the game, and Division 2 for those who take their football less seriously. But don’t let the divisions fool you as there are trophies, winners medals, and cash prizes for the winning teams’ charities of choice across BOTH divisions.

POST MATCH CELEBRATIONS!

From the field to the bar, our soccer stars and spectators will be unwinding post-game at the Sydney Portuguese Community Club (adjacent to the event) for the official Musica Copa After Party – DJ line-up and more info to follow.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we bring you all the latest transfer news and tournament gossip plus the all important Official Draw.
